POSTERS
The task of designing a poster is always up for grabs and the examples here represent the work of probably a dozen different makers over our thirteen year history. Clearly some group members have a greater graphic glee and confidence than others and so have contributed more poster designs.
Traditionally the paper aspect of Exploding Cinema publicity materials has taken the form of A3 and A4 posters (usually black & white imagery printed on to brightly coloured paper) and A6 flyers. In recent years a group e-mail out a couple of weeks before a show has been the most effective method of publicising the event. Emails are easily recirculated by recipients, so are as efficient as word of mouth. But e-mail relies on addressing an already known and knowledgeable audience i.e. communicating either to folk who have come to previous shows, or visited the Exploding Cinema website and requested to join the mailing list. There's always the danger of becoming too cliquey, so the tradition of a new poster for each show has continued.
You may notice that on some of the earlier posters a contact telephone number is included. As some of the group would spiritedly go out and flypost, this soon proved not to be such a good idea
Early poster for 'Screenings' at the 'Regal Cinema', Brixton, 1991 (DR)
Before the Exploding Cinema found its name a series of formative open access screenings were being run by its early members at the Cooltan Building in Brixton, a squatted suntan factory. This poster/call for work also advertises the 'cinema group meetings' from which the Exploding Cinema would soon spring.
